This week we have some killer electronic house from Oneida/Chippewa artist Stone Mathers to sink your teeth into and move your feet to.

Marshall Stonefish, aka Stone Mathers, has been driven to create his whole life. He cites Lego as his first medium of choice and has dabbled in all art forms but "music," he says, "of all things made me." In high school he discovered how to make beats, and his creative passion found a new outlet in electronic music, but his work today travels electronic, house, noise, pop and soundscapes.

"I know what i like to hear and but i don't know what i like to create. Creativity is a monster, it needs to be wrestled into the dirt. And I'm the Creator."

Dig it.

NDN-Jamaican: Native Roots Interview and Video Playlist

Native-Roots.jpg

Native Roots has been making their unique "NDN-Jamaican" music since 1997. Their sound has a solid foundation in reggae but is blended with the band's Indigenous culture.

The songs incorporate traditional drums, flute and chants, but you can hear the cultural influence in Emmett "Shkeme" Garcia's vocals as well - his voice reflecting his experience singing traditioanl pueblo and powwow music.

Indian Country Today's Saturday Night Videos featured all Native Roots this week. If the band is new to you, the playlist is a great introduction. Sit back and enjoy at indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com.

For further insight, NAPT recently posted an interview with Native Roots co-founder, Sisseton-Dakota/Chippewa multi-instrumentalist John Williams. Stream the mp3 here.

Country music is undeniably huge in Indian Country. In our fifth episode we talk to three Indigenous country artists about why that is.

The delightful Crystal Shawanda, an Ojibwe artist from Wikwemikong now based in Nashville, who has shot to international stardom, shares her thoughts and her brand new single, Love Enough.

Up and coming artist Genevieve Fisher, an 18 year old Chippewa of the Thames First Nation, talks about travelling to Nashville - country music capital of the world - for the first time.

Métis artist Ron Loutit may be an unknown name to some, but he has been writing and performing old school country music for 30 years. Listen to his thoughts and lyrics and learn why the hard time tales of country music are not so far away from the experiences of Indigenous people after all.
