Off the top rope! A Tribe Called Red returns with a new EP and a wrestling-inspired video for "Suplex".

ATCR continues their consistent creative output with the release of their latest EP, Suplex. Premiering over at The Fader this morning, the Tribe dropped the hype new video for the EP's title track, which features an homage to 8-bit video games (c/o of Indigenous artist Steven Paul Judd), WWE wrestling (s/o to Tomas Marin), and an ATCR championship belt that's going to be the envy of every aspiring wrestler on the rez.

"Suplex" features A Tribe Called Red's signature sound: dancefloor-rocking beats expertly blended with the adept sampling of pow wow group Northern Voice.

The EP also features guest appearances from the likes of Hellnback and Smalltown DJs—expanding and deepening the group's sound to include not only rapid-fire MC accompaniment on "The People's Champ", but also outright four-on-the-floor trap madness on "Bodyslam".

So mask up and get ready to throw down. The Tribe is back with an unbroken kayfabe vengeance.

A Tribe Called Red: Turtle Island Tour Dates 2014

Fresh off a winter break and another banner year of touring and accolades, A Tribe Called Red are getting ready to hit the road for a string of tour dates across Turtle Island.

ATCR have "been in the studio working on some new songs and will continue before going on tour", so keep an eye out for new tunes on this winter tour—and keep an eye for their debut music video for the track Sisters which is currently being finalized.

Following their Turtle Island tour, the Tribe is working on plans for a tour in France. So get your moccasins and dance moves ready: the electric powwow is hitting the road once again.

RPM Wins United Nations Gold Medal in New York

The New York Festivals Radio Program and Promotion awards, recognizing the World’s Best radio and podcast programs, took place last night in New York. We are thrilled to announce that Electric Pow Wow from the RPM podcast series has been selected as the recipient of the United Nations DPI Gold Medal as well as being awarded a Silver Medal in the Culture & The Arts, Audio Podcast category.

RPM/MBM Digital Inc.  is proud to be among this year’s winners, culled from entrants from 27 countries by an international jury of award-winning radio and podcast producers and industry experts. The United Nations Department of Public Information (UNDPI) Awards, juried separately from the festival by members of the UN, honour programming that “best exemplifies the aims and ideals of the United Nations.”

Indigenous Peoples across Turtle Island have been dancing and drumming for generations but, in the 21^st century, that rhythmic spirit is finding new forms of creative expression. In the RPM podcast episode Electric Pow Wow, the powwow gets plugged in, mashed up and remixed, through an exploration of the work of three Indigenous artists – A Tribe Called Red¸the Ottawa-based DJ collective whose eponymous debut album was long-listed for the Polaris prize last week, Cris Derksen, the classically trained, Cree electro-cellist, and Indian Nick, aka Tlingit/Aleut visual artist and musician Nicholas Galanin.

A Tribe Called Red Calls the Shots

These days, it's hard to keep track of one of Indian Country's favourite contemporary electronic music producers A Tribe Called Red as they take leaps forward into renown and reputation. They've just released a new video, announced summer tour dates, and are celebrating one of their member'sThre3Style.

[UPDATE] Who knew when we published this story this morning that when today's Polaris Prize long list nominees were announced, A Tribe Called Red would be among them! Congrats fellas - the recognition is well deserved. - Editor

Yes, Cayuga DJ Shub has recently earned the reputation of Canada's top party rocker, according to Redbull Thre3Style - a title won in Halifax late last month. DJ Shub also won the top spot at the DMC DJ Battle in 2008, becoming the first Aboriginal DJ to win the DMC Battle. I think the author speaks for Indian Country when he says, bigups Shub - keep killing it! To quote a Justice vs. Simian track, "We, are, your friends! You'll never be alone again!"

Aside from pioneering the Aboriginal Canadian electronic music scene and establishing the presence of Indigenous players as a serious force in the game, A Tribe Called Red has been busy. Bear Witness has been creating a series of videos set to Tribe's music which acts as a commentary on myths and misconceptions regarding today's Canadian, "post-colonial" identity, unveiling both truths and untruths through visual art. Media artists like Bear Witness are an emerging breed and hold a unique talent to be watched closely in the near future. As this exciting field evolves, its people motivated to push like Bear that are evolving it.

Busy is good, because busy means you'll have a chance to see A Tribe Called Red on tour with electronic music favorite Javier Estrada in a town near you. New Indigenous Music Releases - March 2012

There's new music being made every moment, and here are the three newest releases from Indigenous artists for the month of March!

The debut full-length album from A Tribe Called Red has been long awaited and much anticipated to say the least. Released this week as a free download, the purveyors of "pow wow step" flex their creativity through the diverse musical landscapes of hip-hop, dancehall, moombahton and electronic styles. This month saw another debut from newcomer Ali Baby - who RPM profiled last month in DJ DoezIt and Ali Baby: Native Rap in High School Hallways. As Mixed Breed, Ali Baby with Chino, Annalex and Lil Shugz, have released The Beginning a mix of rap, r&b, hip-hop, rock and country. It is also a free download! Last but not least, a very exciting release from Delmore Recordings is a recently unearthed recording by Karen Dalton. 1966  features Karen solo on banjo and guitar, plus four duets with Richard Tucker. The recordings are intimate, unfiltered and stirring. You can get 1966 digitally, on CD or vinyl at delmorerecordings.com.

Electric Powwow: Westcoast Potlatch Edition Weekend

The Electric Powwow hit the west coast with A Tribe Called Red on February 25th, 2012 as part of the Talking Stick Festival.

The ever-famous Electric Powwow headed by the DJ trio A Tribe Called Red made its debut in Vancouver  as a part of a very musical weekend. With the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards in town, Beat Nation opening at the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Electric Powwow rolling through as part of the on-going Talking Stick Festival, the weekend of February 24th was an important time for Vancouver's Indigenous music and arts scene.

Friday the 24th marked the opening of the Beat Nation exhibit at the Vancouver Art Gallery with the Fuse event that brought over 2000 visitors to the gallery to check out the new exhibit as well as musical performances by Silver Jackson, Skeena Reece, Vancouver legendary B-boy and artist Nelson "Dedos" Garcia, Raymond Boisjoly, Jackson Two Bears, A Tribe Called Red, and myself Ostwelve.

After rocking the fourth floor venue with A Tribe Called Red, we made our way to the "Indigenous Afterdark" after party at W2 Media Cafe where an unofficial after party for the Fuse event and National Aboriginal Achievement Awards would be held.  Hosted by Ojibway comedian Ryan McMahon, the night consisted of performances by DJ Muk Luk, Lorenzo aka Leonard Sumner, JB The First Lady, Silver Jackson, myself Ostwelve, an ever-deadly performance by the Skookum Sound System and a surprise teaser set by A Tribe Called Red.

People danced the night away til the early hours in a packed venue with some of the most amazing natives around. (Yes...that was Gino Odjick ripping up the dancefloor!)

Saturday the 25th was another day of musical mayhem in Vancouver after some rest and preparation, we headed back to the W2 Media Cafe for Vancity's first taste of the Electric Powwow: Westcoast Potlatch Edition. This event was a part of the Talking Stick Festival and was geared to bring some of Turtle Island's best performers out.

The night started with DJ Muk Luk warming up the dance floor. First on the stage was Sto:lo hip-hop duo Rapsure Risin' followed by East Van's own Starmakerz bringing their deadliest tracks out to rock. Soundvibe Records and Vancouver legend Emotionz brought his best to the stage followed by our dearest friend Kinnie Starr whom I had the pleasure of backing up for her set. The night closed with an amazing set by Jackson Two Bears bringing his powerful video enhanced DJ set to the staged followed by a thumping set that closed the night by A Tribe Called Red.

After much planning and promoting, it was awesome to see these events come together and creating space for people to dance as hard as they did was an awesome sight to see. A huge thanks goes out to all the artists that participated and also to the people who came out to support. As well as the Talking Stick Festival, Fuse at the Vancouver Art Gallery and of course our beloved people at W2 Media Cafe for helping to make it all possible!

My voice is finally back to normal and my dancing feet are ready to rock!

VIDEO: RPM Talks With A Tribe Called Red

RPM got a chance to interview A Tribe Called Red during their visit to Vancouver for the New Forms Festival.

Vancouver was also the kick-off for the A Tribe Called Two Toes Tour with Clarence Two Toes aka Ryan McMahon in September, 2011.

RPM was lucky enough to get a video interview with Deejay NDN, DJ Shub and DJ Bear Witness, aka A Tribe Called Red, before they left for Alberta on the next leg of their tour.

ATCR talks about being at the forefront of an electronic music movement as well offers some advice for young artists trying to break into the world of Indigenous music culture.

RPM.fm, VIMAF & W2 Media Cafe Present: Ryan McMahon & A Tribe Called Red In Vancouver

This past weekend RPM.fm had the honour to present a performance by Ryan McMahon with special guests A Tribe Called Red at the W2 Media Cafe as a fundraiser for the Vancouver Indigenous Media Arts Festival.

Earlier this month we were approached to help find a venue to host a show with Ryan McMahon out here in Vancouver. It just so happened that Ottawa super group, A Tribe Called Red, were also slated to be in town. Naturally an amazing community space came to mind, the W2 Media Cafe, which is always a great place for these kinds of events. The venue is run by promoter and community activist, Irwin Oostindie.

The opportunity to have these greats acts here was something I couldn’t resist. Vancouver has a wide variety of music shows coming in and out of town regularly, but it is not as frequent a case for Indigenous music and comedy acts to showcase their artistry in an accessible venue. With no budget and MUCH help from the staff at W2, we were able to present an intimate show to the community.

Ryan McMahon, the Ojibwe comedian taking the internet by storm, started his journey on Friday with his drive out to Vancouver from Winnipeg - no easy task for one person. A Tribe Called Red brought their unique styling of Electric Powwow music to the masses at the New Forms Festival held at the Waldorf in Vancouver on September 10th to a packed house and rave reviews.

The crew at W2 were working hard all weekend with their media coverage of the New Forms Festival and tying up the last details to get put this show together. Using their new facilities upstairs from the Media Cafe at W2, a cafe/lounge and a great sound system were set up, and all things were go for 8pm.

Hosted by Ostwelve, the show began with an opening comedy act, Sliammon First Nation comedian Cliff Paul, who displayed a great set of jokes to warm up the crowd.  Ryan McMahon’s set followed and  opened with a recording session of his new podcast show, Red Man Laughing, for which he interviewed A Tribe Called Red before they gave the crowd a small dose of their music.

Ryan McMahon didn’t fail to deliver as he told us a story about how he saw an exploding elk on the highway en route to Vancouver, which he described as both “very sad and totally awesome”. After a 45 minute set, Ryan stepped off stage for a bit while the crowd got an intermission from the late summer heat before coming back out as his alter ego Clarence Two Toes, garnering the laughs that Clarence always does.

Closing the evening was a very special performance by A Tribe Called Red. As the legends have stated, they bring to the stage an amazingly high-energy show, lacing their sounds of Powwow-step music with Moombahton rhythms that had everyone out of their seats and moving their moccasins.

New track by Ottawa Electric Powwow speaker-pounders A Tribe Called Red was released this week on SoundCloud entitled PowWowzers which features drum group Northern Cree and Ojibwe funny man Clarence Two Toes.

After reaching 60,000 hits on their Soundcloud page, A Tribe Called Red celebrated by releasing a new track that features world champion drum group Northern Cree and a sample of the super funny Clarence Two Toes, giving us another dance floor shaker to move to.

The trio have embarked on a Canada-wide tour with comedian Ryan McMahon this week and are set to hit up several cities and communities along the way. Their use of powwow samples and hard hitting dance rhythms have been doing them well, allowing them to perform at various festivals around the world and to gain recognition from top music blogs and producers.

This new style of dance music is geared to be booming through speakers for a long time, making sure that getting the crowd moving remains the foundation of this group’s success and letting us know that Indigenous music is on the rise in more areas than just country and rap. Their live shows are something of legend and are true to the reputation of getting people out of their seats and onto the dance floor.
